Benefits of Nature

By Tatjana Pleus

I love reading about the benefits of nature—and experiencing them is even better .

To slow down a little and breathe in that fresh air! Sunlight is a mood booster, fresh air clears the mind, and moving our bodies outdoors becomes natural exercise… all for free! Nature keeps giving—all we have to do is step outside, enjoy, & notice. As Hokusai said, There is no end in seeing.”

I warmly invite you to join us for a monthly guided nature walk at Hopkins Wilderness Park, hosted by the South Bay Parkland Conservancy (calendar link). For up to one hour, we explore using all of our senses—learning about birds, pollinators, native plants, ecosystems, and seasonal changes. You might spot a soaring Red-tailed Hawk, or even baby owl hatchlings in their nest. Mary Simun, a wonderful biologist, and I (Tatjana Pleus) are taking turns in guiding the walks. I love to include a gentle flute moment with a breathing exercise to slow down and be in the moment.

I’m also a big fan of nature journaling—just bring a notebook and note what you see, hear, and feel. Over time, it becomes a meaningful record of connection and appreciation. With nature journaling, you are in constant awe and wonder of the magical interconnectedness and infinite intelligence of nature.

If you’re interested in meditation, I also offer monthly sessions through the Beach Cities Health District Moai Social Groups.

Nature does have such a profound impact on so many aspects of our lives, especially our health and happiness. Just 20 minutes outdoors lowers our stress hormone cortisol and helps us regulate emotions. Nature also reminds us of where we belong. It is nature therapy :)

I hope to see you there!

If you want to learn more about nature wisdom, check out my little picture book "Poppy's Magical Animal Adventures"on Amazon or find me under Tatjana Pinkskies for relaxing piano music.

“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”

John Muir wrote that in 1877 was right about that.
