Project History and Progress
When the original peoples of this region, the Tongva, occupied the area now known as Gardena, the Willows Wetlands then comprised many hundreds of square miles of marshland eventually known as the Dominguez Channel. Rainwater drained through the Dominguez Channel out to the ocean past Wilmington and San Pedro. This is a rare vernal wetland that is home to and a stopover for hundreds of species of plants, animals, fungi, and other biota.

Get Educated
Plenty of native plants and animals call Gardena Willows home.
Gardena Willows is a rare, natural- bottom wetland. A hidden gem in the South Bay where nature, beauty and education coalesce for the community. This slideshow features animals you may spot on your walk through Gardena Willows.
“Students say The Willows is the perfect calm place to enjoy nature, and I feel the same way - being able to walk immersed in it, seeing animals and just slowing down, makes it really special.”
