Crozier Middle School Students Cultivating Change Through Native Pollinator Gardens
Growing Leaders with Grades of Green -a Guest Blog
This spring, something special began to grow at Crozier Middle School in Inglewood. Alongside rosemary, sage, sweet peas, and other native plants, a group of dedicated students planted the seeds of leadership and environmental action.
With education and support from Grades of Green and plants from Sunflower Farms, these students transformed an underused area of their campus into a thriving native pollinator garden. They carefully selected plants that not only brighten the space but also support local pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Their thoughtful choices reflect a deep understanding of the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem health.
What truly makes this project stand out is the commitment and passion of the students involved. Many had never gardened before, yet they embraced the challenge with open minds and willing hands. They spent time learning about native plant species and pollination, and Grades of Green is helping to develop a plan that will ensure the long-term success of their harvests. Their efforts have already made a visible difference on campus and have inspired others in their school community to get involved. These students are setting the example of how young people can take meaningful action for the environment and create positive change in their communities.
For those interested in starting a similar garden, the Redondo Beach Community Garden is a wonderful local resource. It offers hands-on opportunities to learn about native plants on the pollinator hillside, sustainable gardening practices, and the value of community green spaces. Visiting the garden can provide inspiration and guidance for schools, families, and individuals looking to create pollinator-friendly habitats.
The native garden at Crozier Middle School is more than just a collection of plants. It is a symbol of what happens when students are empowered to care for their environment and take pride in their impact. We are so proud of what they have accomplished and look forward to seeing how their work continues to grow.
