AES Dune & Wetland Restoration update on the California Water Resources Board vote
Unfortunately the planned closing of AES has been extended...

At the September 1, 2020 meeting, the California Water Board voted to extend operation of the Redondo Beach generating station. For many of us following this complex issue for years, even decades, Board Member Deirdre Brand provides an update on the most recent actions around the shutdown of operations and removal of the AES power plant as well as the City of Redondo Beach reponse to sue the CWB. The South Bay Parkland Conservancy has been an active advocate for the removal of the AES power plant and power lines in order to build a park and landscape corridor. Read more...
Redondo Beach Community Garden update
We are looking for planning volunteers

Our Community Gardens Committee welcomes Native Plant expert, William Pettit to our board. Mr. Pettit is on SBPC's advisory board, and the project lead for the Wilderness Park restoration. We are glad to have him on board.

We are also in the process of growing our Community Gardens sub-committee to include individuals who can help with responsibilities like grant-writing, publicity, community engagement, and more to help create an official community garden for Redondo Beach. If you would like to serve on our committee (commitment is ~10-15 hours/month) send an email to Brianna at briannajungegan@gmail.com

Meet SBPC's new Treasurer, Amanda Tong

Hi - my name is Amanda Tong, and I'm so honored to be involved with the SBPC.
Spending quality time in the outdoors has been an integral part of my life - I spent summers of my childhood in Houston, TX making weekly trips to the arboretum, my college years (Go Duke!) running along trails alongside the North Carolina pines, and the last 8 years as a South Bay resident enjoying greenbelt and exploring all the local parks with my husband and daughter.
Service to the community has always been a large part of my identity - I spent a year as an AmeriCorps member with College Forward. I am so glad to be a part of SBPC, working to make the outdoors available to the entire community. When I'm not working with SBPC, I work as a consultant, where I enjoy solving challenging client problems and the opportunity to work with inspiring people. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, travel, beach volleyball, watercolors, reading, and backpacking.
Thank You to Mayor Bill Brand!
In celebration of his birthday, Mayor Brand requested donations for SBPC.

Last week Mayor Bill Brand celebrated his birthday and requested donations to SBPC as a way to acknowledge the day. He wrote on his facebook page,

"Seeing how today is my birthday, I want to ask everyone to consider a generous donation to the local non-profit agency that has been working for over 16 years to get a park at the AES site.  As everyone knows by now, this is going to take persistence and leadership from the community.  This group of stalwarts are paving the way for not just this project, but other projects in the South Bay..."

Mayor Brand was a founding member of SBPC, and continues to be an important ally and advocate for the work we are doing. We are so thankful for the generous donations that poured in, and excited to grow our community with new supporters.

Family Craft: Ghost Leaves!
Watching my kid's eyes light up at all the spooky decorations already out on September 30th, I realized Halloween isn't cancelled this year. It will just look a little different. Now more than ever we need the special, festive holiday spirits to help get us through this time. Take a break from those school zoom sessions and head outside to collect leaves for an original and nature-centric Halloween craft. This one is so easy folks! Visit the Mother Natured blog for full supply list and directions. Tag us on instagram and we will share your finished product! @southbayparklandconservancy
Your donation today helps make SBPC's ongoing efforts possible. There is no better time to invest in our parklands than the present. SBPC is a volunteer-run organization. Your donation goes towards things like plants, tools, landscape professionals, public education and outreach materials.
