Subject: Heart Park Update - September 2007

Greetings everyone,

Do you know who Jenny Oropeza is?  You should, but I'm guessing at least half of you don't.  She's your new State Senator (actually its almost been a year) replacing Debra Bowen - who's now Secretary of State of California.

Yesterday myself, Jim Vaught and Linda Moffat met with Senator Oropeza to discuss our vision for a park at the AES site in Redondo Beach.  Let me assure you she's a like minded individual who knows a thing or two, or three, about acquiring land and constructing parks.  She used to be on the City Council in Long Beach and told us yesterday that getting the 24-acre, Cesar E. Chavez Park built has been her most fulfilling accomplishment so far.  She was touching her heart when she told us that.  So she definitely supports our efforts.

I could go on and on about her accomplishments and stellar environmental record, but take my word for it, she's one of us.  And she knows the thick and thin we're going through.  Most importantly, she can champion our cause at the all important state level along with Ted Lieu, when the time comes.

So send her a Happy B-Day!   She turned 50 today.  And thank her for her time with us yesterday and whatever else you can think to say to encourage her.  Her support for our effort is EXTREMELY important, so if you had time to read this far, Thank you!, but take a couple more minutes to shoot her an email.  When we get this park you'll be able to say you helped in your own little way.  Really!  This kind of sustained community support is the foundation of all our work.

On Thursday, October 11th, at 7 p.m., at the Veterans Park Historical Library just south of the Redondo Pier, we will have a community event featuring the Coastal Conservancy, Mike Witzansky of the Parks and Rec. in Redondo Beach, and the beloved Martin Byhower of the local Audubon chapter and Harbor Park fame.  They just got $117 million in restoration funds from Proposition O for their park.  $117 MILLION!!  That's not a typo.  Come here how they did it.

Free SBPC t-shirts to the first 20 people!  Refreshments will be served.  Bring quarters for parking, or park under the pier and pay later.

Don't forget to email Senator Oropeza....

See you on the 11th!
