Subject: Heart Park Update - August 2007

Great news!

The California Coastal Conservancy has begun feasibility studies to determine if its, well, feasible to purchase the AES Redondo site for a park.

On August 1st, they visited our town yet again and met with Mayor Mike Gin, City staff, Councilmen Steve Aspel and Chris Cagle to present a 'funding matrix' that showcased what funding was available that could help pay for such a facility.

Earlier in the day they also met with Assemblymember Ted Lieu to discuss the work on this project, as well as some legislation currently being considered in Sacramento that could affect available funding from Proposition 84.

The State Coastal Conservancy (http://www.coastalconservancy.ca.gov/), at the State's expense I might add, will be performing various tasks including: cost of acquisition, cost of construction and how to fund the ongoing maintenance and operation of such a facility.

This is a great development for our vision, and to reinforce the point that there is a resurgence of park construction going on all over the country -  and that something of this magnitude is entirely possible - attached is an article from the Wall Street Journal published in June.  Its a MUST READ for everyone who has dreamed or thought about the possibility of building a waterfront park here in the South Bay.

Please read it.  It will only take a few minutes of your time.  People yet to be born will be glad you did.

Here's the sub-title to pique your interest....

"Cities are building new parks at a rate not seen in 100 years."
