Greetings
Everyone,
The SBPC has been VERY
busy over the last couple of months:
- Yours truly made an
important visit to Sacramento in late April
- We had informational
booths on Earth Day at both the SeaLab and
Polliwog Park
- The Sierra Club formed
the South Bay Open Space task force which was initiated by us and Joan
Davidson, a local environmental activist who is spearheading the community
efforts to restore the landfill site on the
Palos Verdes Peninsula
- We began talks with
Southern California Edison and the City of Redondo
Beach about planting a native
garden under the power lines just west of PCH.
- We scheduled our next volunteer day with the Beach Bluff
Restoration Project
On Saturday, May 26th, 9 a.m. - noon, at the top of the ramp at Avenue I,
come volunteer your time and help us weed, plant and water the native
vegetation of the Beach Bluff Restoration Project.
We did this last year (check out attached photo) and it was a lot of
fun! It's a good way to give a little of your time, meet some new
friends, and help with a great project that needs our continued TLC. Bring
your friends and neighbors. Plan on getting dirty, but you can't beat the
working conditions! I'll have more details next week, but drinks and
muffins will be served.

On April
26th, I went to Sacramento and
met with our state representatives, Ted Lieu and Jenny Oropeza.
I also had the privilege of meeting with
Joe
Caves,
who authored Proposition 84, the $5.5 billion clean water, parks and
coastal protection act that was approved by California voters
last November. And I spent time Brendan McCarthy, an analyst with the
Legislative Analyst Office, who briefed me on their recommendations on how
Proposition 84 money should be allocated.
In short,
as Joe
Caves said,
"You have a great project and great enthusiasm."
He thinks Ted Lieu is an 'up and comer' and that his support for
our project was very helpful. But we also need a sustained effort
and continued support from all of you! Your positive comments to
others and those that represent you are very important. Don't let the
enormity of this complex project intimidate or discourage
you. This park and wetland is the right thing to do and
it can happen! If not sooner, then later. If
not all at once, then in pieces.
Visit our webpage for a
look at some new photos we've added, and to view our latest newsletter, the
Blue Heron.

Thanks to all our new
members! And welcome to those who signed-up at Earth Day to
receive these monthly updates. Spread the word!
Hope to see you on the
26th!
