Subject: Heart Park Update - November 2006
All,
Today was a great day for the park
effort! Californians approved another $5.4 billion for cleaning-up
our oceans, rivers, lakes and streams, and adding and upgrading our
parkland. If you read the initiative - Proposition 84 - you'll see
there is money all throughout it that could go towards helping Redondo Beach
restore a wetland, and build a beautiful marquee park on the coast for everyone
to enjoy. Not just Redondo Beach, but the entire South Bay, and visitors
from all over the world.
This money will also draw more funds from
other sources, such as county, federal, and private sources. We need to remember one thing though, Proposition 84
passing does not guarantee we will see a cent of it. Communities all over
the state that have won grants and raised money for efforts like this can tell
you, "Its a marathon, not a sprint." And it takes political will and
political leadership to accomplish something so monumental.
We've spoken with many local leaders and the more we talk, the more
they listen, and the more they see the greatness of this opportunity. A
leader has not emerged yet, but I'm certain one will. "Rome was not built
in a day."
California voters have now approved 12 of 15
clean water/park bonds presented to them over the last 36 years. Over $15
billion worth just in the last 6 years. Cities like Malibu and Rancho
Palos Verdes have done quite well in securing these funds because they
have learned how to market their coastal resources in a way that draws
enthusiasm and interest from outsiders who see their coastline as
a treasure to be restored and preserved.
The City of Rancho Palos Verdes was out front on
this bond, hiring the right lobbyist years ago. His name is Joe Caves, and he authored Proposition 84, as
well as the $3.5 billion Prop 50 initiative that passed in 2002. It should
be no surprise then, to learn that $5 million of Proposition 84 was already
committed to RPV if it passed.
That's how its done folks. Help make the
bond happen, don't just sit back and wait to see if it passes and then
stick out your hand if it does. The PV Land Conservancy donated over
$100,000 to the YesOn84 campaign. The SBPC donated a measly $250, but
thanks to your kind donations, at least we're on the map.
We've had good days and bad days over the years
working on this park effort. If you've read this far you know what I'm
talking about. Today was a GREAT DAY! Raise your glass in a toast to
our progress. We may still have a long way to go, but we've come a
long way too.
Thanks for your support!
