Subject: Heart Park Update - August 2005

Hello everyone,

Redondo Beach is not alone in their mission to restore the AES power plant site for public use.  And neither is Rancho Palos Verdes alone as they try to raise $4 million by September 15th as their portion of a $25 million deal.  As you can read below, state, county and federal dollars, as well as monies from philanthropic organizations such as the Annenberg Foundation are all helping to preserve a beautiful piece of open space for the entire South Bay to enjoy.

To help stop this opportunity from slipping away, the Board of Directors of the South Bay Parkland Conservancy has agreed to match the first $250 in donations made to us for this cause.  We wish it could be more of course, but our group is very young.  This is a great opportunity to help though and we want to show our appreciation for all their efforts, and acknowledge the fact that residents from all over the South Bay will benefit if this purchase goes through.  And who knows, we may be calling on them to help us one day.

The deadline is right around the corner, so make your checks out today to the South Bay Parkland Conservancy, and write Portuguese Bend Preserve in the memo section.

If the $4 million is not raised by September 15th, in all likelihood the owner will eventually close this area for good and begin another housing development - much like what has happened at Ocean Trails and Golden Cove.
This property represents one of the only areas in the South Bay where residents can enjoy the native beauty of our coast.  Many of us have been hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, parasailing or just relaxing on this privately owned land.  The Palos Verdes Land Conservancy has been on a quest for several years to purchase this land from the developer so that it remains available for all of us to enjoy - for free - for generations to come.  Please help if you can.

The Opportunity is Now - Save Portuguese Bend

  • The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and the City of Rancho Palos Verdes are working to purchase and preserve the remaining open space in Portuguese Bend.

  • The goal is to create a Preserve that will cover 1500 acres and include more than 20 miles of public trails.

  • Land must be purchased from two property owners to create the Preserve.

  • 75% of needed funds for the acquisition will come from federal, state and local agencies, from sources that can only be used for projects of this type.

  • The PVPLC must raise $6 million locally to complete the purchase -- $4 million by September 15, 2005 -- to complete the first acquisition.

  • Become a Legacy Stakeholder by donating a full or partial acre of funding.

Thanks for your continued interest and support!
